Professor Mica once said 'Jiu Jitsu is made for us.' This simple statement speaks volumes and without over analyzing it the basics are, ANYONE can train Jiu Jitsu. So no matter what you're looking for: stress relief, competition, self-defense, self-confidence, and/or just to 'get in shape' We at California Jiu Jitsu Academy believe Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has something to offer everyone and we look forward to sharing your Jiu Jitsu journey with you.
San Diego native Kerri Mikita began training when she was 7 years old in Okinawan Shitō-ryū Karate. She received her black belt in Tang Soo Do in 1998 alongside her father through Master John Auer and the World Tang Soo Do Association. She has continued to expand her martial arts training in Kobudo (Okinawan Weapons), Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Kung-fu San Soo and Shotokan as well as attending advanced training seminars on grappling, personal safety and weapons defense.
She graduated from the University of Oregon with her Bachelors in Psychology in 2005 and attained her second Degree Black Belt and official Instructor certification in 2009.
In 2015, she accomplished her long-held dream of studio ownership by co-founding California Karate Academy with Master Karl Courage and became the sole proprietor of California Karate Academy in 2018 also earning her Third Degree Black Belt under Master Rick Jones.
Eventually, Chris moved to San Diego, where he currently trains with the Clark Gracie Team under the watchful eye of Professor Clark Gracie. Clarks lineage speaks for itself and the level of play at his academies is awe-inspiring.
Chris is excited to be a part of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program being offered at California Karate Academy. Of all the things he has learned over his years of training is that your team can make or break your training. While Jiu Jitsu is an individual pursuit, your training and improvement is equal to what your coaches and teammates bring on a continual basis, and he will give you his best every day that he shares the mat with you.

"Professor Bruno's enthusiasm and support have been nothing short of incredible, I would consider myself a great success if I were to offer up half of the love and support he gives his students and family every day." Chris Serrell

Chris started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Nov 2005 in Las Vegas, NV with Team Mica (Professor Mica Cipili). Among some of the important principles of life and Jiu Jitsu, Professor Mica gave him a deep appreciation for the fundamentals and a passion for the art.
Chris moved to Denver, CO about 2 years later and started training with Colorado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Professor Dave Ruiz where he would eventually earn his brown belt. He learned from many things from Professor Dave, those that stand out most were how to be a good coach and a better listener.
With a move to upstate New York he started training at Renzo Gracie Latham, under Professor Bruno Tostes. Professor Bruno and the team would end up flying out Professor Dave to NY to award him his Black Belt in Sept 2015.
